Jet Airways (9W): In our travel advisory about traveling through Delhi, there were three main reasons why one should not travel through Delhi i) Long overnight stay at the Delhi airport due to flights not connecting ii) Luggage not being automatically transferred and iii) Harassment by airport officials and police. Apart from that, we were worried about the quality of the India/Nepal based airlines that would fly between Delhi and Kathmandu. With the introduction of Jet Airway’s morning flight between Delhi and Kathmandu and its flights to two New York destinations, this airline is single-handedly going to make us change our ill-perceptions about traveling through the Delhi route. Jet Airways has daily flights between two New York airports, JFK and EWR (Newark). These evening flights stop in Brussels briefly and continue to Delhi reaching at 12:10 AM and connect quite well with the 6:30 AM flight that Jet Airways has introduced to connect all the late night Delhi flights to Katmandu’s lucrative market. The luggage is automatically checked all the way to Kathmandu and that does not give the airport authorities to hassle Nepal bound passengers. We constantly read about India’s surging economy and tremendous improvements. Jet Airways is a testament of this glory. It is a well run airline with world-class operations and superior customer service. Jet has interlined agreements with AA, Virgin, and United and connects very well from the eastern and middle states. Many of these flights connect at London’s Heathrow airport in the evening, reach Delhi at 10:45am and continue onwards to the Kathmandu after a 2.5 hour transit. If you are leaving an airport from the US in the evening with a connection in London, this might result in 8-12 hour transit. On the return, you can catch an afternoon flight from Kathmandu, reach Delhi around 5 PM, and catch the flight onwards at 3:05 AM in the morning. When purchasing a Jet ticket to Kathmandu, you can ask your travel agent whether it will be cheaper if they give you two separate fares, one between the US and Delhi, and a separate ticket to Kathmandu from Delhi, using Jet. Even though you are taking the same flights, you need to remind the airline counter to check your baggage all the way to Kathmandu. Although the airline is priced similar to Middle Eastern carriers such as Gulf and Qatar from the eastern and middle states, the Jet fares end up costing more because of higher taxes. Because Jet flies the New York – Delhi route, it has started lowering its fares quite a bit, and it is possible to fly between NYC and Kathmandu for under USD 1200. Caution: Please don’t take a Jet flight that has an additional stop in more than one Indian domestic airport (e.g. KTM – Mumbai – Delhi - NYC) because you will face complications since you have to check out all your luggage and then check them in between the international and domestic airports.
