India Transit Visa For American citizens traveling to Nepal via India, a transit visa is required under the following conditions: 1) if you need to leave the airport and; 2) if you must leave the airport to pick up checked luggage. For example, if you have an American Airlines ticket to Delhi from Chicago and a connection with Nepal Airlines to Kathmandu they do not have an interlined baggage transfer agreement. So you have to leave the airport to collect your baggage, and for this you are required to have a transit visa. On the other hand, if you are flying with Qatar Airlines to Delhi and you have a connection to Kathmandu on Jet Airways, these two airlines have an agreement and they will check in your luggage all the way to Kathmandu. Make sure you double check with the originating airline to confirm the luggage transfer procedures. If you’re layover in India is less than 24 hours, most airports do not require a transit visa, but you must not leave the airport. As referenced from the India Consulate of the United States, the information below provides you with the information needed to obtain a transit visa. “A transit visa is granted for the sole purpose of enabling the holder to travel through India to reach his/her ultimate destination. Change of purpose is not allowed. The visa will ordinarily be valid for a single/double journey and for entry within 15 days of date of issue. The Transit visa is valid for direct transit only for a maximum period of 3 days. For a stay in India beyond 3 days, an appropriate visa should be obtained. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30.” 1. Application: Complete the online India Visa Application.
